Melges 24 Slovenija
Altea takes the honours in Portorož

Prizegiving Melges_Top_3An up and down breeze that never trully filled in at any point ensured for close knit racing on the final day of European Melges 24 sailing series in Portorož. Altea's three victories in a row saw the team open an advantage as Lenny (EST) and Audi (ITA) rounded off the podium.

Italy's Altea brought a 7 point lead into the final day and made sure to keep the rivals at bay with two further bullets. »We did two rounds and the conditions could not have been more lenient as we never had more than 6 knots of wind. Winning in such circumstances is reassuring because we expect similar conditions in Balaton, where European Championship will take place in May,« said Andrea Racchelli.

With a seventh and a fifth place, Estonian Lenny lost a substantial lead but still managed keep place second overall. »To finish off second after a six month break is fantastic. Everybody has had a few bad races along the way and this enabled some really close racing, making the event really great,« explained Toniste brothers.

Audi team (ITA) sailed themselves to the bronze knocking Storm Capital Sail Racing (NOR) out of the podium. »We couldn't have asked for much more in these tricky conditions. The boat is new and we found a few things that could be improved. It was a good training before the Europeans,« said Simoneschi impressed also by the venue: »The Marina in Portoroz has superb facilities and the hosts were very kind to all of us. They made the  event simple but efficient. We look forward to come back here the next year.«

The first leg of European sailing series was also valid as Sloveninan national championship, won by  Atena. »We've won the title but we're also thrilled with our eigth place overall. This gives us plenty of motivation for the season ahead,« said Jure Jerkovič, new Slovenian number one.

For the european melges 24 fleet the attentions now turn to European championship starting on Balaton Lake in May

Superb racing in Portorož with sun and gentle breeze

Second day of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series regatta in Portorož has been dominated by light winds. Slowly but surely, the sea breeze started appearing in the bay of Piran around noon providing the fleet of 24 monotypes another great day of racing.

The race committee left the harbour according to the schedule with the intention to make the most of the day. Therefore, as soon as the wind from the west increased from four to seven knots, the show was on. The first race entirely belonged to Croatian Tomislav Bašić, who led the pack from start to the finish with a considerable advantage. Storm Capital Sail Racing (NOR) delivered a fantastic performance as well and was rewarded with a second place, while Altea (ITA) placed fifth but managed to maintain the lead. “We had another great day. In the first race we started badly and had to catch up, however in the next one we were precise and collected our first victory. We don’t have any particular strategy for tomorrow’s final races. With seven points of advantage and a fifth place discarded, we don’t feel under pressure. So, we will keep taking one day at a time and concentrate to give our best,” said Andrea Racchelli.

Lenny (EST) has climbed to the second position overall after scoring a fourth and a third. “This is our first regatta in six months. We last raced in September and we are surprised how well we’re doing. We came here to have fun but since we’re on top of the chart, our appetites have increased,” said Toniste brothers, ready for tomorrow’s merciless finale.

The battle will be particularly intense for the third place, as Storm Capital Racing (NOR) and Audi team (ITA) are only a point apart. “The wind was quite light and changing a lot so it was very hard to read. I’m glad we are still in the game for the podium because the boat returned from Australia only recently and its settings are not optimal yet,” commented Riccardo Simmoneschi.

The fleet will continue with three scheduled races tomorrow.

Melges 24 european sailing series takes off

Melges news 1The opening day of Melges 24 European Sailing Series in Portorož was blessed with sunshine and steady wind. After the relaxing morning in the marina, sailors hit the water at noon to sail their first races.

The north/east wind filled the bay in the early hours allowing the race committee to start the event according to the schedule. After four races sailed Altea (ITA) is leading the 24 boats fleet, ahead of Audi team and Storm Capital Sail Racing. »Other crews had one bad performance while we were very constant throughout the day. We are very satisfied with the outcome. It's actually better that what we were hoping for,« admitted Andrea Racchelli who collected 14 points of advantage in front of Riccardo Simoneschi's Audi team (ITA) and Storm Capital Racing (NOR). »We arrived here only yesterday,« said the helmsman of the latter. »After 20 hours of driving we were quite tired but a short rest was enough to recharge our batteries. Besides that, we have still snow in Norway while here it's already spring. The weather and temperatures are just perfect. We really enjoyed racing and are really satisfied with the results so far,« said Peder Jahre.

The event is also valid as Slovenian national championship and for Agapeja it's the first race after almost two years of absence. »Initially I was completely out of shape. I lost the feeling and we weren't functioning as one. However in the last race we pulled out the best of us. The start was perfect and all the manoeuvres were smooth. This victory is very important for us, it keeps our spirits high,« was motivated Hinko Golias, eleventh overall and second in the Slovenian ranking.  On top of the national chart is Jure Jerkovič with Atena. “Of course we are thrilled to be amongst the top ten. This was our goal and we hope to continue like that,” said Jerkovič, before joining other competitors at pasta party.
